The Hamden Symphony Orchestra at Quinnipiac is a non-profit community organization devoted to the performance of fine music. During our ninth season, in 1970, we established a concerto competition with the desire to nurture the special musical gifts of young people in the community. Since then our orchestra has featured these players in one concert each season and we and our audiences have delighted in sharing many fine performances.

It is our intention not only to recognize superior artistic accomplishment but also to foster development of each individual's potential through participation in this exercise. The experience of learning a concerto and playing before a panel of judges can be quite valuable personally as well as musically. We hope you share this viewpoint and will encourage your students to participate in this activity.


ELIGIBILITY

This competition is open to students in grades 9 - 12 who study voice, piano, or any orchestral instruments and meet the following requirements:
  1. must reside, attend school and/or study music with a teacher in New Haven County,
  2. must have a note of recommendation from a music teacher,
  3. must be able to perform with the orchestra at the Concerto Competition Concert on Sunday, May 3, 2009.

AUDITION

  1. Audition music will consist of one concerto movement or solo work with orchestra and is subject to the approval of the Music Director. Works must be in the public domain.
  2. The performer is required to provide his or her own accompanist.
  3. Memorization is desirable but not required.

AWARDS

Awards will be presented at the Concerto Competition Concert on May 3, 2009
